America’s Largest Urban Historic District
Savannah was established in 1733 and became the capital for the British Colonial Province of Georgia. Today, Savannah is an ever-expanding industrial center, and is a key piece to the Atlantic seaport. Savannah is the 5th largest city in Georgia. Visitors here love to visit the Savannah Historical Society, one of the country’s oldest continually operating historical sites. Savannah is located on and around the Savannah River, and it is 20 miles upriver from the Atlantic Ocean.
The Historic Landmark District spans two and a half square miles and many residents can claim the city’s lush squares as their front yards. The north end of the district is widely commercial but numerous blocks of the area are solidly residential or dual-purpose buildings. Both this district, and the Victorian District are ideal for pedestrian residents.
